Mediumship and art meet in a London centenary exhibition

An exhibition spread through the College of Psychic Studies’ London townhouse brought the visual history of mediumship into an unusually intimate setting. Anna McNay’s review for Studio International, published on 12 January, followed works and documents across eleven rooms.

The Medium is the Message marked a century since the college moved to Queensberry Place. Curator and archivist Jacqui McIntosh assembled more than 100 works and archival objects by over 35 artists, connecting nineteenth-century material with contemporary practice.

Automatic drawings and writings sat alongside paintings, photography and sculpture. McNay described notebooks by William Stainton Moses and work by Anna Mary Howitt Watts, Ethel Le Rossignol and Ithell Colquhoun, among others.

The show ran from 9 October 2025 to 31 January 2026. This archive report records its January coverage; the exhibition has finished. The review remains an accessible route into the collection and its artists.
