A forgotten City of London haunting acquired a much clearer address in March. Historian Stephen Miller announced that he had identified the business associated with a 1901 poltergeist account as the St John Del Rey Mining Company, operating from Finsbury House in Blomfield Street.
The accounts describe moving objects, doors opening and closing, a voice and a priest blessing the premises. Miller’s new contribution concerns where the story unfolded, rather than a claimed explanation for every reported occurrence.
His announcement connected the company’s Brazilian mining history with the London building and the older Royal Bethlehem Hospital site. Two episodes of The Poltergeist Project had been released when the press statement appeared, with further research planned.
The address gives researchers a starting point for checking company records, contemporary reporting and the history of the site. It also shows how a new documentary discovery can return an old haunting to the news without changing the date of the original events.
