Multispectral satellite images can contain motion signatures because their colour bands are recorded at different times. This study examines how those offsets can reveal moving vehicles.

Method and scope

The analysis uses Planet Labs SuperDove imagery and reconstructs timing information indirectly to estimate movement of aircraft, cars and boats.

What to keep in mind

The method depends on the satellite’s imaging design and the timing reconstruction. Detecting motion in an archive image is not evidence that the object is anomalous.
