Scientific reports · Laboratory plasma experiments
Microwave-heated basalt produced melting, lava-like flows and luminous plasma ejections in laboratory experiments, offering a controlled way to study phenomena resembling volcanic processes.
Method and scope
Small basalt samples were heated in a microwave cavity; optical and material diagnostics examined plasma and nanoparticle products.
What to keep in mind
A small laboratory analogue is not proof of the origin of natural ball lightning or a particular volcanic light. Scale and energy conditions differ.
