The journal of physical chemistry. A · Laboratory plasmoid study

Researchers examined ball-lightning-like plasmoids formed above an electrolyte discharge, testing how solution chemistry affected their size and lifetime.

Method and scope

High-speed schlieren imaging and infrared absorption spectroscopy investigated structure, mixing and chemical signatures while electrolyte acidity was varied.

What to keep in mind

The authors study a laboratory analogue whose underlying processes remain incompletely understood. It should not be presented as a settled explanation of natural ball lightning.
