Nature ecology & evolution · Collaborative ecological investigation
Aboriginal knowledge, art and narratives were combined with excavation evidence to examine Australian circles known as linyji or mingkirri. The authors emphasise harvester termites within a wider landscape system.
Method and scope
The study brings cultural knowledge together with observations of hard bare patches and termite pavement nests.
What to keep in mind
The findings concern the studied Australian systems. They do not establish that every circular vegetation pattern worldwide has the same origin.
