Table View, July 2026: three changing lights over Table Bay

HISTORICAL CASE · 28 JULY 2026 · TABLE VIEW, CAPE TOWN

Three people watching from a Table View parking area reported lights changing brightness over the sea on 28 July 2026. Their account survives as a public NUFORC submission, rather than an agency investigation with a reconstructed track.

The account and its dates

NUFORC record 199791 dates the sighting to approximately 21:15 local time. The reporter, their wife and a third observer watched three orange-to-yellow-white lights westward. Two appeared brighter and more active. They described apparent whirling movement and repeated fading, then left while the lights remained visible.

The form gives twenty minutes, while the narrative says approximately fifteen minutes before departure. Its estimates of size, distance and a position near Robben Island are witness impressions, not triangulated measurements. A vessel named Essien is mentioned as a visual reference, but no independently checked ship track accompanies the account. The filing was made on 30 July and published 2 August 2026.

The shoreline as a reference

The City of Cape Town’s Tableview page supplies a public coastal reference and coordinates. That establishes the relevant stretch of coast without pretending to locate the parking bay or an object out at sea. The reporter’s sightline and the plotted shoreline point serve different purposes.

What further material would resolve

A continuous recording with a stable horizon would help separate the movement of a camera from movement of a light. Precise timing and a known observing position would then allow comparison with aircraft, ships and astronomical objects. Without range, an impression of rapid angular movement cannot by itself provide an object’s actual speed or physical dimensions.

UKPX reviewed the published witness text. No independent identification is supplied there, and none is assigned here. The source provides a dated account worth retaining with its uncertainties, rather than a basis for drawing a precise offshore trajectory.

Location and source record

Public Tableview beach reference; the observer’s parking position and the lights’ offshore distance are not independently established. Geographical reference checked by UKPX.
