Java’s pocong rumours, May 2026: reused videos and the police checks

HISTORICAL CASE · MAY 2026 · CIREBON AND REPORTED LOCATIONS ACROSS JAVA

The recorded event in this file is a wave of ghost-related rumours and the checks they prompted in May 2026. It does not establish a series of apparitions. The Indonesian police describe a pocong as a shrouded ghost figure from local folklore, used here in frightening claims about roadside robbery.

Cirebon: a claim without a corresponding incident

At a 26 May briefing, Cirebon police chief Imara Utama said officers had neither received a matching complaint nor found a factual basis for the circulating story. ANTARA’s report of 27 May identifies the jurisdiction as Kabupaten Cirebon and the force as Polresta Cirebon. The police’s English account, published 28 May follows that reporting. They belong to one source chain, not two independently confirmed ghost encounters.

Central Java: the same material, different captions

A separate Central Java police statement records Artanto’s 27 May explanation in Semarang. Cyber patrols found the same photographs and videos being reposted with different locations. Posts named Grobogan, Kendal, Magelang and Cilacap, but officers’ local checks found no corresponding incidents as described online. Police continued night patrols to reassure residents; the patrols were a response to public concern, not confirmation of the ghost claims.

Why this remains one case file

Different captions can turn a single image into an apparent cluster of local reports. Counting each repost as a separate encounter would conceal that relationship. This file therefore groups the May circulation and official responses, while retaining which force made each statement.

UKPX reviewed the dated public statements and ANTARA’s briefing report. The original circulating media were not authenticated here, and no individual is identified as their creator. The sources establish the rumour and the stated police findings; they do not justify assigning an apparition to any particular house, road or person.
