Incident: 16 September 2026, Cholguán area near Yungay, Chile. SEFAA case 2287, resolved 24 September and released 8 October 2026. Identification: Airbus A321 flight LAN060.
The bright point was recorded in the early morning near the Cholguán wood plant. To the observer it looked unusual against the sky. SEFAA examined the image sequence, reconstructed its direction and compared it with a documented airline passage.

The recording’s chronology
The seven-page investigation includes a Xiaomi 14 video lasting about 1 minute 33 seconds and a photograph. Although the opening account estimates 07:25, the video metadata begins at 07:19:09 and the photograph is timed 07:19:45. Those file times provide the more specific reference for the comparison.
Selected frames show white light with red and green components. SEFAA considered those changing colours consistent with aircraft lighting. The recorded point’s apparent brightness does not itself determine how close the aircraft was to the camera.
Reconstructing the direction
The initial direction was described as east-north-east. The investigator’s landscape and viewing comparison instead placed the relevant sector towards the south-west, approximately 215–235 degrees. Resolving that difference was important: a search of traffic in the wrong sector could create a misleading apparent absence of aircraft.
The flight comparison identified LAN060, an Airbus A321-211 travelling from Puerto Montt’s El Tepual airport towards Santiago. The replay information cited in the inquiry gives an altitude of 36,525 feet, a speed of 436 knots and a heading around 14 degrees. Those figures belong to the identified aircraft record; they are not independent measurements extracted by the witness from the bright point.
The regional label and conclusion
SEFAA classified the case as resolved through the airline comparison. The public source heading uses Biobío, while Cholguán and Yungay fall within present-day Ñuble. UKPX uses Ñuble for the current geographical filter and retains that source-label difference here, rather than moving the case to a different locality to fit the heading.
The inquiry appears in the 8 October release. The licensed 2025 photograph provides location context and is not the witness’s 2026 evidence. Likewise, the public locality pin avoids turning a workplace report into an exact camera position or suggesting that the airliner was directly above the mapped town centre.
Location and source record
Approximate public Cholguán locality reference, not the precise workplace viewpoint, camera location or airliner position. Coordinates follow the checked geographical reference.
