Chillán, August 2026: the changing lights and four satellite identifications

Incident: 15 August 2026, Chillán, Chile. SEFAA case 2272, reported 16 August; resolved in September and published 8 October 2026. Assessment: satellite passages.

Two submissions described the same evening’s lights. The reporter and their partner saw bright points appear, rise and fade, with an apparent triangular arrangement at one stage. The witness specifically said that the three lights together had not been captured. SEFAA grouped the submissions and examined the later-supplied recordings.

What the clips contain

The nine-page investigation describes three Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra clips totalling 2,124 frames. Their metadata place them between 21:28 and 21:30. Durations were roughly 26 seconds, seven seconds and 38 seconds; those clips are not a continuous record of the full reported five-minute experience.

The camera direction was reconstructed towards the western sky, approximately 255–275 degrees. No corresponding transponder-equipped aircraft was found in the relevant comparison. Venus and the low Moon were considered in the sky reconstruction, but were not the explanation selected for the moving points.

Comparing separate passages

SEFAA identified the first clip with Starlink 36120 and the second with Iridium 109 Next. The third contained two points crossing in the scene, attributed to Starlink 32883 and Globalstar M096. The report supplies catalogue identifiers and orbital elements for those comparisons.

The agency’s explanation depends on several independently orbiting satellites becoming visible and fading at different times. An observer who follows a succession of points as though each reappearance were one object could perceive abrupt changes of direction. That is the investigator’s account of the apparent movements, not proof that the witness measured an impossible turn.

Reading the result

SEFAA classified the case as resolved. Its supplied orbital data and selected frames allow the reasoning to be followed, while UKPX has not independently recomputed the tracks or measured the original videos. A frame comparison is also narrower than the complete recollection: the uncaptured triangular arrangement remains part of the testimony rather than a photographed formation.

UKPX read the full report and reviewed selected key figures. The official release is dated October, but the recorded incident belongs to August. Both original submissions remain one canonical case here.
